Types of Gum Disease

The chart below shows the American Dental Association’s® classifications for the health of your gums, and the bone that supports your teeth. During your appointment at Birch Family Dental, our hygienists will evaluate the state of your oral health and give you the information you need to maintain or improve the health of your gums.

Gingivitis is a word most everyone has heard. It simply means that your gums are swollen and may bleed due to the bacteria and plaque in your mouth, which is often the result of improper brushing or flossing.

If gingivitis is left unchecked, it can progress into a serious form of gum disease called periodontitis. Periodontitis occurs when bacteria work their way below the gumline and begin to feed on the bone that supports your teeth. The result can be bad breath and tooth loss.

We want to do all in our power to help our patients maintain good oral health in Green River, Wyoming, and their surrounding areas, and educate them about what to do to have a healthy smile. When you visit our office, the hygienist will talk with you about what kind of cleaning will be the best for you and will help your teeth stay healthy. If you are concerned about the health of your gums, or if it is just time for your regular appointment with our dentist, Dr. Birch, contact our office at 307-875-3658 today.
